BIM-ProVeSy Rijkswaterstaat

Pavement Information Model for asphalt data

BIM-ProVeSy Rijkswaterstaat (Pavement Information Model) connects asphalt data from more than 100 datasets covering production, testing, mix compositions and road administration. Using Linked Data and an Object Type Library OTL, the project makes these datasets interoperable and queryable. Rijkswaterstaat and Boskalis use the model to improve asphalt analysis, management and prediction.

The BIM-ProVeSy application is built on the Wistor platform to make the Pavement Information Model (PIM) accessible. It allows Rijkswaterstaat and partners such as Boskalis to explore, query and reuse asphalt data from more than 100 datasets. By linking laboratory tests, production data and road administration in one semantic model, the app provides a clear and consistent view of asphalt performance across the entire lifecycle.

BIM ProVeSy in action

This app is an example of what you can build when data is treated as a powerful asset. We created this environment to show others how complex pavement information can become simple, visual and useful. Inside the browser different datasets, maps and forecasting tools work together seamlessly. Today we walk you through one concrete case: the skid resistance dataset. You will see how easily you can select a stretch of road, filter measurement values, view history across many years and generate a clear prediction for the future. We hope this demo inspires you to think about your own data in new ways.

  • Large-scale harmonisation

More than 100 datasets aligned into one domain OTL, bringing together different formats, naming conventions and measurement methods in a consistent semantic structure.

  • Lifecycle in one graph

Mix designs, lab results, production batches and road sections connected end to end, revealing patterns that were previously invisible.

  • Fully queryable

All lifecycle data accessible via SPARQL, without custom integrations or pipelines.

  • OTL-driven configuration

The semantic model drives the application, keeping interface and backend aligned without custom code.

  • SHACL validation

SHACL validation: automated checks during ingestion ensure all datasets follow the same semantic rules.

  • Scalable by design

New datasets can be added by extending the model and mappings, without changing the application structure.

  • Supports sustainability and forecasting

Enables better predictions and lifecycle planning for long-term asset management.

Usecase

From data silos to smarter road management

For years, asphalt and pavement data has been locked away in separate systems: laboratory tests, production plants and road administration each kept their own records. This made it nearly impossible to see how materials performed over time or to use data as a basis for planning.

BIM-ProVeSy breaks down these silos by linking more than 100 datasets into one Pavement Information Model. With this shared model, Rijkswaterstaat can:

  • understand how asphalt behaves in practice
  • make reliable maintenance and investment decisions
  • predict road performance and extend lifespan
  • reduce environmental impact through smarter planning and reuse of materials

Instead of fragmented information, there is now one source of truth for managing and improving the Dutch road network.
